Role Hamlet
Director David Farr

Jonathan joined an illustrious roll call of Royal Shakespeare Company Hamlets, including David Tennant, Michael Redgrave, Ben Kingsley and Mark Rylance, in March 2013, when he played the melancholic prince in David Farr’s Swan Theatre production.

In what has been described as one of the most eagerly anticipated Hamlets of recent years, Jonathan added Hamlet to a growing list of Shakespearian leads that includes Prospero, Malvolio, Puck, Richard II and Richard III.

Hamlet is the son of the late King of Denmark, who suspects his father was murdered. Returning home from University he discovers that his mother has married his Uncle Claudius, who now reigns as King. Late one night, the ghost of his father appears to him, accusing Claudius of his murder and urging Hamlet to take revenge. This sets in motion a train of events that destroys both family and state.
