In September 2013, Katie Leung opened in the lead role in Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig's new play The World of Extreme Happiness, directed by Mike Longhurst for the National Theatre.

Katie played the central role of Sunny, a young woman in contemporary China who leaves her home in the countryside for the bright lights of the city and the promise of a better future.

However, her passion for self-improvement is eventually crushed by the social, political and economic pressures surrounding her.
