Colin MacInnes was a journalist, essayist and novelist whose late 1950s London trilogy Absolute Beginners, City of Spades and Mr Love and Justice became cult classics capturing the embyronic youth culture that blew up in the following decade.

Absolute Beginners was filmed in 1986 directed by Julian Temple and starring David Bowie and Patsy Kensit. The Lyric Hammersmith produced a stage musical of the novel adapted by Roy Williams (Sing Yer Heart Out for the Lads) collaborating with director Liam Steel.
