Caroline, or Change Opens at Chichester Festival Theatre

May 12, 2017

Michael Longhurst’s revival of Tony Kushner’s Caroline, or Change opens at Chichester Festival Theatre to an array of 5 star reviews.

Starring Sharon D. Clarke in the title role this poignant and exuberant musical tells the story of Caroline, a maid working in the basement of a wealthy family in Louisiana in 1963, and her relationship with the family’s 8-year-old son Noah. When Noah’s new step mother tries to teach Noah about the value of money, their relationship is forced to confront the wider social and racial tensions raging in 60s America.

Michael Longhurst recently directed the acclaimed revival of Amadeus at the National Theatre which returns by popular demand in 2018 and is currently directing Gloria at Hampstead Theatre.

****  ‘Michael Longhurst’s production has a miraculous fluidity.’ - Guardian

*****  ‘Complex yet big-hearted, joyfully exuberant but sharply political, it’s owned by Michael Longhurst’s brilliant multi-generational, multi-cultural cast.’ - The Stage

Caroline, or Change runs at Chichester Festival Theatre until the 3rd June.
