Rupert Evans stars in Agora, a Spanish historical drama which receives its release in the UK this Friday 22nd April.
Set in Roman Egypt,
Agora centres around the astronomer-philosopher Hyatia of Alexandria and her struggle against the oppressive forces of the Christian church, who see her research as a potential threat to their order. Evans stars opposite Rachel Weisz as Bishop Synesius of Cyreme.
Prior to its premiere in Spain, the film played Out Of Competition at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival.
The
LA Times called
Agora "a provocative historical epic...crammed with both stirring visual images and intellectual ideas."
"
Agora is a visually imposing, high-minded epic that ambitiously puts one of the pivotal moments in Western history onscreen for the first time," writes Todd McCarthy for
Variety.
