To Be a Machine shortlisted for Wellcome Book Prize

Mark O’Connell’s To Be a Machine has been shortlisted for the Wellcome Book Prize. The award is given annually to a work of fiction or non-fiction that has “a central theme that engages with some aspect of medicine, health or illness.” The winning author receives an award of £30,000, and will be announced at a ceremony at the Wellcome Collection on 30 April.

In To Be a Machine, O’Connell explores transhumanism, the movement to use technology to enhance human intellectual and physical capability. The book has previously been shortlisted for the Baillie Gifford Prize and the Royal Society Science Book Prize.
