Will Mackin and Nafissa Thompson-Spires Win PEN Awards

Will Mackin's Bring Out the Dog was awarded the PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize while Nafissa Thompson-Spires won the PEN Open Book Award for Heads of the Colored People. 

Bring Out the Dog is a collection of short stories that portray the devastation, absurdity, surrealism, and compassion in modern warfare, drawing from Mackin’s own experiences as a U.S. Navy veteran. 

Heads of the Colored People is a funny, sly, and devastating collection of short stories that examines the precariousness of black lives in the United States.

The judges' lauded Bring Out the Dog as 'The debut of a visionary and a virtuoso,' and praised Heads of the Coloured People as 'Both of the moment and utterly timeless.' 

Bring Out the Dog is published by Random House and Heads of the Colored People is published by Atria.
