Director of Documentary & Fiction

Emmy-nominated film-maker James Erskine’s work stretches across drama and documentary for the big screen and small. Working as a director, writer and producer James has been the guiding voice behind a number of award-winning films, as well as working extensively in television.

With a background directing TV drama such as ROBIN HOOD and TORCHWOOD, James went on to direct and write (with Marie Jones) the 2015 comedy feature film SHOOTING FOR SOCRATES starring John Hannah and Richard Dormer, as well as the 2017 indie thriller THE WHITE ROOM starring Oscar Jaenada and the 2005 TV movie OIL STORM for FX.

His cinema documentaries included the IDA-nominated and BAFTA shortlisted BILLIE (2019), the hit sports documentary SACHIN: A BILLION DREAMS (2017), which scored a number one hit at the Indian box office (grossing over $12m worldwide), 2018’s THE ICE KING which is currently being adapted into a scripted feature at Lionsgate , 2013’s THE BATTLE OF THE SEXES (which inspired the Hollywood movie of the same name), and big screen sports docs ONE NIGHT IN TURIN (2010), PANTANI: THE ACCIDENTAL DEATH OF A CYCLIST (2014) and THE END OF THE STORM (2020). His television documentary work includes the Amazon Originals series LE MANS: RACING IS EVERYTHING (2017) which he created, produced and directed, and the Humanitas-prize winning THIS IS FOOTBALL (2019)

He has written features for Wall to Wall and Darlow Smithson, his feature film STEALING SPEED is optioned to a major US producer and ASIAN TIGER with Carnival Cinemas in Singapore. He also produced 2019’s Oscar-shortlisted MAIDEN. With a fascination for true stories James’s work has been exhibited at major film festival including Telluride, Sundance and Toronto, and has been distributed theatrically in more than 50 countries, and on a wide range of streaming and broadcast platforms.
